Nassima, a life of challenges

Since an early age, Nassima (meaning breeze in Arabic) Chabane has been cradled in the Arab-Andalusian tradition of Blida, her native city, founded by the Andalusians. It is in this context that Nassima continues to promote the art of Andalusian poetry and music, which previously boasted a unique culture where the three great religions, Islam, Christianity and Judaism coexisted harmoniously. Her early beginnings at a musical conservatory at the age of 7 allowed her to become very adept at the Arab-Andalusian style, all with the help of El Hadj Medjbeur who taught her instrumental techniques and Dahmane Benachour, one of the greatest masters of this art, who for over 8 years taught her the secrets of vocal art.

A very capable student, she was accepted into the prestigious ensemble El-Widadja, founded in 1932. She also worked at starting her own group Nadjma . Encouraged and supported by great Andalusian masters such as Mohamed Bengergoura, Sadek Bedjaoui and Hadj Jamidou Djaidir, Nassima's career took off on a very successful path. Nassima became very popular in 1979 when she was asked to record an anthology of Arab-Andalusian music and its popular derivates at the RTA (Algerian Radio & Television). In 1984, accompanied by the symphonic orchestra of Algiers , she performed the entire nouba of Zidane, adapted by professor Bradai in an attempt to bring together the sounds of Western classical music and the genius of Arabic music

Her career began to flourish internationally in various African countries, in Europe, and in Asia . She became an ambassadress of Arab-Andalusian music and in 1987 she received one of the highest awards from the president of Algeria.

Between 1987 and 1994, she was assigned a television series which explored the Maghreb 's musical and poetic heritage. Since moving to France in 1994, her desire and willingness to make her music a crossroads of exchanges and dialogues has taken her around Europe where her music has become widely known.

She was welcomed to great acclaim at the prestigious Parisian hall of the Theatre de la Ville (on various occasions in 2000, 2003 and 2006) and also in the Institut du Monde Arabe (Arab World Institute), at Unesco, and in the Sorbonne amphitheater accompanied by the National Philharmonic Orchestra of Algiers. Concerts in other European countries from Spain to Sweden , in Arab countries and also in the United States , has made her one of the greatest specialists of Arab-Andalusian music.

She has also participated in a number of festivals of sacred song and of world music in France and other Mediterranean countries such as the Fes Festival of World Sacred Music in 2006. And after 10 years abroad, she was welcomed back to Algeria with great honor where she performed concerts in the most prominent halls of Algiers . The press, the TV, and the radio all spoke very highly of her and her achievements.

This mezzo-soprano virtuoso with exceptional talent, with a powerful yet warm voice, offers a moving hymn of love and universal peace to our startled souls, which embraces a millennium of mystic Sufi music. And, with a career of over 30 years, she has reached the peak of her art. An heir to the great masters of Arab-Andalusian music and poetry, Nassima is our future!

“My music is like the crossroads of life! In my heartfelt songs of love and peace, I seek to transmit a message of eternity and immortality”.
